Grade: Level 3
Job purpose: Under the direction of an Auditor or a Senior Auditor, the Assistant Auditor will be responsible for carrying out small audit assignments or parts of larger audit assignments.
Supervision: None
Job outline:
1. Assist in planning and evaluating tasks to be carried out for Financial Statement and Value for Money audit assignments.
2. Prepare working papers to the required standard for both planning and fieldwork stages, demonstrating an understanding of the principles and reasoning for the work.
3. Be able to highlight exceptions and weaknesses found, or recommend either further work that may yield results or suggest improvements to the management process/corrective action.
4. Work as a Member of the overall assignment team – offering flexibility where necessary - to help bring the work in on time and to the required quality level.
5. Develop professional knowledge by studying for and, within two years, achieving the Introductory and Intermediate levels of the Certified Accounting Technician qualification.
6. To provide assistance to the Administrative Assistant for any admin and accounting duties and to cover the reception duties during the Administrative Assistant’s absence.
7. Any other duties required in the operation of the Service.

Special Conditions:
Although the normal place of work will be the Audit Office, Castle Gardens, and the normal hours of work will be consistent with those typical of an SHG employee, the nature of Audit work is such that it may from time to time be necessary to work unusual hours and at any location on St. Helena.
The individual must possess these skills and abilities, or explain and demonstrate that s/he can perform the essential functions, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some combination of skills and abilities.
The Assistant Auditor is required to have:
a) Achieved good GCSE qualifications in English and Mathematics and also Accounting or Business Studies or equivalent;
b) some general clerical experience;
The Assistant Auditor is preferred to have achieved:
a) At least 1 year of recent experience in the fields of audit or finance.
b) The Introductory Level of Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) or equivalent.

Contacts/Relationships
Required:
· To liaise with SHG personnel (key point of contact – Senior Executive Officers and below) and external clients (Accounts Managers and Clerks) for any audit assignments on a regular basis.
· To act as first point of contact for SHG personnel (at all levels) councilors and external clients (Accounts Managers and Clerks) when covering reception duties
· To liaise with Finance Accounts and Administration for any accounting issues when covering accounting duties.
· To liaise with SHG personnel at appropriate levels for delegated administrative functions
